VOLTERRA .... a sea to be discovered!
On November 28, 2009 is an incredible building, opened in Volterra SHOW PALEONTOLOGY organized by SOS VOLTERRA and GAMPS Scandicci .
Here is a video- Spot:
It all started about a year ago, when our internet research we found this video of Simone Casati of GAMPS:
We contacted Simone for replication of its video on Volterra Television and immediately began a beautiful friendship that in time allowed the definition of this exhibition with a Paleontological Association of the most revolutionary and active in the area, SOS VOLTERRA , always careful to safeguard the identity and the historical-artistic and cultural potential of our city.
SOS VOLTERRA , along with GAMPS Scandicci, also decided to tell this story, "When there was Volterra ... and sharks eat whales." Yes, millions of years ago, the sea was upon us, or rather covered "Volterra" who was a seabed. Traveling over our heads magnificent specimens of fish and mammals whose remains now end up in the show, come down to us through the processes fossilization in clays and clays of our gullies.
At the end of 1600, the Dane Nicholas Steno, the father of modern geology and paleontology, he stayed at home in Volterra Maffei and following its findings, called Volterra and its territory "treasure trove" in his book "De robust intra solidum naturaliter happy dissertationis Prodromus "(1669). A Volterra
really is ... a sea to be discovered! Under our feet there is a richness that goes beyond the history of their ancestors and that Etruscan is rooted in the Pliocene sea millions of years ago is well documented in the book accompanying the exhibition (shown below the album cover):
See you at the show which will be open from November 28 to December 13, 2009 in Via Turazza to Volterra!

VOLTERRA TELEVISION turns two!
The August 8, 2009 we celebrated the second birthday VOLTERRA TELEVISION: A year full of satisfaction with you that follow us all over the world!
Last month, we crossed the threshold of 500,000 requested video from the beginning of our work in favor of free Volterra: the current trend bodes well for a double in the next 12 months! But the most important thing for us is not so much the numbers, rather than the strong awareness to contribute more effectively to the promotion of Volterra e alla conservazione delle video-memorie storiche e culturali del nostro territorio.

Holding Pennies In Aluminum Boat
from the deepening reality of the birth of the American and European "Model Reggio"
word yet of the Mediterranean to the doctoral students, and their reflective capacities: after the first exit, continue with Benjamin Cordova,
doctoral research at the Department of Planning SAT, graduated "cum laude" in Urban Planning and Environmental
. The young researcher is responsible for metropolitan planning, from transportation to public spaces to
appropriate forms of participation, and is committed to promoting a "Reggio model" for building the Metropolitan City. The correlations thesis
is overseeing the investigation of transport planning in urban centers. Benjamin Cordova
performs scientific research with special attention to metropolitan areas known directly: Boston (USA), Barcelona (Spain), Copenhagen - Malmö
(Danimarca - Svezia). (Enrico Costa)
development processes.
The Metropolitan Area Urban Plan will need not simply be an indication of a higher-level
Urban Plan but will have a strategic location that will enhance and local particularities.
Reggio Metropolitan City, so. The public was informed, and Reggio day after day
have become aware of this new growth opportunities for the community and the city. For the city and the surrounding area.
is now a desire to see tangible change Reggio (in mentality), improve (in Services), change (in Form) modernize
(in structure). A desire that is preordained.
It is the first step (the mentality) to which you have to start "Thinking Metropolitano", in order to "Acting Metropolitan".
Reggio must become leaders of their own metropolitan area and take the helm of the development process of a vast territory. To do this he needs
raise awareness, not just those who daily reggini are "bombarded" by the news
but especially those who are in town for work, study, and to use the services (the second piece, the Services): Users of the City; to them (just
them) must make it clear that the establishment of "Reggio Metropolitan City" can only bring benefits, transport, services in general, even at the cost of
contribute economically through taxes anyway reinvested locally (because "Underground City")
in the spirit of fiscal federalism: a small price for a great value.
is known that the Metropolitan City in any context determines an increase in the mobility of people, so it takes as a fundamental priority objective
the reorganization of the relational system.
With better organization of transport will have a better connection of the main center with the areas that revolve around it, and then we will see
also, probably, to a mutation in the form of the city that the city will no longer be understood according to the old borders
necessarily but we will face a City wide, polycentric, in accordance with the identity and positive (
third piece, mutation of the form).
In my other contributions on this theme, I proposed to set up right now "The Metropolitan Transportation System" which stresses
reports, notes, Reggio with the areas that orbit the city from a careful organization of existing resources
(city rail, bus), although not fully utilized, and future (hopefully in the birth of the "Underground
of the Sea", an idea that I carry on for three years, as a link between the ports of the Metropolitan Area of Reggio Calabria). This is the first step
is basically useless to think of doing otherwise.
is clear that the metropolitan area of Reggio, today must not give priority to the design of new infrastructure but
improve existing ones, starting from the 106 and continuing with the arteries, a comb, from the coast, they climb to the areas internal.
A metropolitan area, fully urbanized maybe (hopefully the second floor and does not address illegally) need roads
equipped and planned specifically to carry out this task (fourth piece, modernize facilities).
That said, established the Landmarks, we must be able to build the "Model Reggio", ie a model of development of our Metro Area
starting from the knowledge of other similar situations around the world, evaluate, examine, learn about the benefits of
some choices and negativity of others and try to get the better it is for this reason, a graduate student about a year and a half, I chose to
live and work in scientific research for a month in Boston (USA), for three months in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain), having a
prior knowledge of reality as the Metropolitan Area "transnational" in Copenhagen - Malmö (Denmark - Sweden). Metropolitan areas
very different, but three metropolitan areas consolidated specimens, living, they have in common with each other,
and Reggio Calabria, the fact of being located on the sea. Three reality that, without any kind of attitude "provincial", we would like to see
spread in our country, obviously maintaining, enhancing and developing, our specificity. Cultural and environmental.
From these experiences it draws a lot.
living them with intensity and enthusiasm they deserve, and there Another way for a young researcher, it is appreciated and idealizes the
transport system in Boston, diverse, dynamic and efficient. In this regard it is useful to pick up another of my contribution
(published June 25, 2009 by Strill.it.) A description of the transport system of the American city: "The transport system
includes buses, trains - even long-distance -, Subway, Tram - travels to the surface on the outskirts but within the urban center
becomes underground and then a subway to all intents and purposes - special bus for connecting city / airport - even those
underground, true to bus' Internal identical to those underground galleries, without a clear but simple binary
asphalt - and finally reach the Waterfront hydrofoil from Logan Airport and other locations in the Metropolitan Area, offering a further
service to commuters, all of these with a single ticket). Copenhagen
The case presents an extraordinary interest, a node is matched only by a few other urban modernity to
of programs, including the European cities of medium size.
Copenhagen is a city of 600,000 inhabitants in the urban municipalities and about 1,300,000 in the metropolitan area (
a context almost identical to that of Boston).
The development of the Danish city in the first place, and thereafter amalgamation with the Swedish Malmö was built on the base, also
here, a massive reorganization of transport.

ingombrante arteria in superficie.
Queste sono le realtà che fanno scuola.
A Reggio Città Metropolitana queste notizie possono servire? Si può far tesoro delle esperienze altrui? Forse sì, e come?

Perché fare Ricerca scientifica in America e perché proprio Boston? Presto said.
scientific research in these latitudes, I happily noted, that plays a completely different value than what we have, unfortunately, is assigned. Attending a PhD (Philosophiae Doctor), the equivalent of our Ph.D., is to immerse yourself completely and daily (also attending the beautiful, well equipped and located in places most certain, University College, similar in concept but not in the form to the student's home, designed by us) in the study and innovations in the discipline.
And then, let me say, there is also a bit of pride in saying "I'm Attending a PhD in Italy" and see the faces of the people to the libraries at MIT or Harvard University (two of the most important universities of the world), smile and open doors, or cashiers in bookstores, happy to be able bodied to apply discounts, or even almost happy face and permissive of irreproachable American police at the border.
I dare not think, the hilarity that would result in the same sentence spoken in Italy.
If we add that we also attended a PhD in Urban Planning in Reggio Calabria come even invitations to dinner. Yes, no joke.
Doctorate in Urban Planning until a few years ago, and it has been for many years, affiliated with Northeastern University in Boston and still nourishes the relevant overseas account.
Research in Boston. When it comes to scientifically metropolitan areas, it can not be separated from that of Boston.
The American city in the world goes to school in this area and a detailed understanding of the policies they implemented from birth to now play a determining role in a context such as the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria.
is essential to understand how participation of citizens or the city's relationship with the smaller towns that revolve every day to work, services and other things around it.
Take advantage of their transport metropolitan, not study them only in books, can help to clearly define some concepts. To understand, for example, Reggio Metropolitan City, will have to start a serious policy of transport planning, starting from the resources in place, can not ignore the emergence of a single (I say only) Metropolitan Transport Company, which means to put under the roof, metro area, Metro Bus and the Sea, in the service areas that revolve around the city: just so you can aim for an efficient modality.
also designed as a false problem to think right now the municipalities wishing to be part of the Metropolitan Area Reggio. The Metropolitan Transportation System is not concerned with this, the only role it plays is to ensure an adequate service to customer requests.
From where comes the question of daily transport home - work - services?
There is a specific standard, you often use the criterion of the average distance of 100 km from the main center (is data that is used as a general criterion), to be done by one means or by using more modes (intermodality) of Metropolitan Transportation System.
In a serious and efficient, it hardly seems problematic even reach the city from considerable distances.
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), namely the Transport Company of the Metropolitan Area of Boston includes buses, trains (including long distance), Subway, Tram (on the outskirts traveling on the surface but inside the city center and then becomes an underground station at all effects), Special Bus for connecting city airport (also underground, real bus inside a tunnel are identical to those of the metro, but clearly no simple binary asphalt) and then hydrofoil from Waterfront reach Logan Airport and other locations in the metropolitan area, offering an additional service to commuters, all of these with a single (it is said only) ticket.
this fundamental point: "additional service for commuters" or "alternative to a system already well established and efficient", this practice appears to be the connecting service to Boston by sea.
And 'passing the basic idea, this is especially true for Reggio Metropolitan City, which is not always important to find and only the fastest or cheapest way to get a place, especially the important thing is to find alternatives that are not quantifiable in monetary terms but improve the quality of life. It is not important (this applies to the future, we hope, Metropolitan Transportation System), for esempio, trovare il modo più veloce per arrivare a Reggio da una qualsiasi zona della propria Area Metropolitana ma bensì è importante sapere di poterci arrivare in svariati modi.
Bah, I do not think, considering the conditions of the Salerno - Reggio. Even so?
We realize that this will improve the quality of life, at no cost, using existing resources? (The ports are there, waiting for someone to remember them).
must know the reality overseas to understand that our proposal in the same context has had excellent results?
Maybe in Boston have figured out that the resource landscape, especially the urban one, you can use from a different perspective as the sea, not just watch the city from the city but look at the city from the sea, and the role played by the landscape becomes of primary importance.
Unwittingly it the last State Examinations for planners, addressed the issue of the Landscape: the landscape and environment - the area: three approaches, a reality.
E 'clear, a single reality.
These disciplines are tied together hand in glove in the light of the new university reform that fits inside the studio of the land and the environment (urban) just the landscape, and the apparent link between the discipline is also a consecration by central government.
The city of Messina in this paper was not involved. The solid and lasting relationship, especially transport, between Messina and Reggio, will, of course you will, to consecrate the Metropolis of the Strait, but for now Reggio should aim to make better use of existing resources, as its own, improve, why think of burning or stages of planning since now, on their side of Calabria, new infrastructure seems somewhat random and totally useless the rest will follow.
In the case of Boston, streamlining transport, also from the physical point of view, for example the construction of the Big Dig, a highway tunnel that passes under the city, made it possible to plan a system of high quality public spaces, the Greenwai Kennedy, who plays mainly to cement, bonding between the areas previously separated by bulky artery in this area.
But that's another story that soon we will, of course trattreremo.

Survival Food During The Apocalypse
The beautiful comes out the policy Pearl
Benjamin Cordova * -
(www.strill.it published on March 15, 2009)
Praise to all political forces, from right to left passing for the center, who worked so hard in support of the new Metropolitan Area of Reggio Calabria.
The dialogue between the various political forces of our city was an example of good policy, a practice that should become common and daily use.
E 'was fascinating, especially for young people who passionately follow the events of politics (I find myself among them), follow the constructive debate between the two coalitions.
Yes, this is the Metropolitan Area of Reggio Calabria and not that of the Strait as was erroneously defined by the vast majority of people.
The beautiful and difficult, however, come only now.
policy, I said, did the lion's share, causing her to the interest of the city has, however inadvertently burned the times.
The birth of a metropolitan area is a process that emerges from the bottom, day after day, brick by brick, it needs to provide the basis for a series of strong relationships, primarily as transport, which allow you to create a single regional system can compete with the outside.
is fundamental for the birth (actual, tangible, non-political) of a metropolitan area having a center around which gravitate towards the smaller towns (in our case would be the main center of Reggio Calabria) providing specific services, exclusive of structures , centrality in transport.
On this we must work hard, Reggio Calabria actually still plays the role of leader of the province or or its metropolitan area, has a clearly defined against the same Reggio, Reggio let alone who lives only a few hours a day.
is needed immediately to work on this problem.
on the services and facilities, there is something, much still needs to be done, it is transport that must implement serious political, practical, durable and environmentally sustainable.
ancestral problems of the roads that connect our metropolitan area we know them in depth, in the railway sector, the birth of the famous "drum", ie the link Melito - Reggio - Rosarno, has made some beneficio (ancora molto, moltissimo, bisogna fare); la prossima apertura al traffico della stazione marittima di Reggio può dare un bel colpo positivo alla cosiddetta intermodalità.
Come ho già messo in evidenza in altri interventi sull’argomento, l’area di costa (intesa da Melito Porto Salvo a Gioia Tauro), 90 chilometri circa, ha una dotazione di infrastrutture portuali di tutto rispetto: sette active ports, the port of the airport and two ports to be built (Pellaro and Cato), practically a port every 10 km.
Put them in relation to each other, also including the dock of the airport, with an underground sea (other than that which conceives of public opinion, that the connection Reggio-Messina), with links costs / costs, and regular daily would not be a useful alternative to the current transportation system?
And then, once completed (mirror) the metropolitan area of Messina, a necessary step before the consecration of the Metropolitan Area of the Strait, you could create a situation similar a quella reggina, ossia collegare i porti della costa tirrenica messinese con quelli della costa ionica passando per il porto di Messina?
renew my praises to the entire political class, in this memorable day for us Reggio, convinced that once the political process of the establishment of the Metropolitan Area of Reggio Calabria at the steps, not least, structural phase.

policy, I said, did the lion's share, causing her to the interest of the city has, however inadvertently burned the times.

Praise to all political forces, from right to left passing for the center, who worked so hard in support of the new Metropolitan Area of Reggio Calabria.
The dialogue between the various political forces of our city was an example of good policy, a practice that should become common and daily use.
E 'was fascinating, especially for young people who passionately follow the events of politics (I find myself among them), follow the constructive debate between the two coalitions.

A few days from the closing of landslide ' A3 motorway section between Scilla and Bagnara, in addition to the near Rogliano, I read with disappointment that has suffered the same fate Statale 18 that, in the last hours in the same section, has been an equal chance. There was to be expected, perhaps endured too much, given the tragic circumstances that lives for too many years this small, abandoned, inefficient artery.
This is incredible.
Incredible for a civilized country, incredible for an area believed to be almost in step with other European countries.
The precarious situation of State Road 18 (and of the motorway A3) was known for some time, many were unfit for use of closure orders by the mayors of the municipalities directly affected.
was known to all, everyone knew. Surely no one had planned
heavy rains this winter, so much so Bertolaso to ask the Government the status of a natural disaster (news a few hours ago) but it was a duty not to ignore the hardships caused by work on the V macrolotto of Salerno - Reggio exactly the same stretch. No one thought of alternatives to the precarious transportation system in the metropolitan area.
knew all, we said, the students of the Faculty Reggine at this point to consider the problem scientifically interesting and topical for a Thesis (including myself).
The poor condition of transportation in the metropolitan area of Reggio is almost the same as that of Messina (Taormina on the Ionian to the Tyrrhenian Milazzo), under these conditions would be the Metro del Mare, for the Calabrian and Sicilian shore, an alternative for carriers measure used, you respond to all email addresses of transport planning (national, international and Mediterranean), it would be burdensome without additional costs (relying on existing port infrastructure), is presented as a stimulus for the redevelopment of port areas, and Finally, using it, it would have a cityscape from a different (opposite Reggio, Messina alle spalle e viceversa), unica, di impareggiabile valore.
The university is also this, we must be able to "read" the ideas of students, understand, interpret, there often arise from the right stimuli, why not, for administrators who work in the area.
